Maternal and Child Health Training Institute popularly known as Azimpur Maternity Centre, was established in 1953 at Azimpur in Dhaka. It started with 20 beds and UNICEF provided fund in 1960 to raise the number to 100 beds. The institute provides specialized services to low income group of women in child delivery as well as in maternal and child health care although only in limited capacity because of constraints in physical facilities. The government of Japan provided funds to implement a new phase of its expansion by the year 2000 and to raise the number of beds to 173 comprising 52 non-paying and 121 paying ones, and 8 cabins. The institute has clinical, training, and administrative units. It serves on average about 200 outdoor patients daily. It has 15 doctors, 30 Assistants, and 130 other staff
